Mercedes-Benz G 580 – First fully electric variant of the iconic G-Class is coming to Australia: the all-new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology.
- The new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology raises the bar for the iconic G-Class, its powertrain of four permanently excited synchronous motors delivering up to 108 kW and 291 Nm to each wheel.
- The electric drivetrain produces a total system output of up to 432 kW and an impressive 1,164 Nm of maximum torque. The G 580’s battery pack has a usable energy content of up to 116 kWh, giving the all-electric G-Class an NEDC tested range of 567 km.
- Impressive new offroad-ready technology such as G-STEERING allows the wheels to turn at different speeds and invoke slight oversteer depending on the situation, while the revolutionary G-TURN allows the wheels on the left and right to spin in opposite directions – so the G 580 can practically turn on the spot when off-road on loose surfaces.
- Design and materials updates include a new 26mm underbody protection made from a mix of materials including carbon fibre and an optionally available black-panel radiator grille. Classic G-Class elements have also been revised including the bonnet, rear wheel arches, A-pillar cladding and the small spoiler on the edge of the roof, with the aim of optimising the vehicle’s aerodynamics.
G 580 reimagines the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The all-new G 580 reimagines the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class for a new era with an intelligent blend of exciting EQ technology, external design updates and innovative features which enhance its offroad capability.
Since the launch of the Geländewagen, or G-Class, in 1979, the model has consistently impressed drivers with its tough off-road capability and distinctly rugged styling. Now, the new G 580 with EQ Technology calls on exhilarating power produced from four individually controlled electric motors set at each of the wheels, delivering output of up to 432 kW and a maximum torque of 1,164 Nm. Smartly integrated within the G-Class’ traditional ladder frame is the 116kWh lithium-ion battery which ensures a low centre of gravity and together with the e-motors, each with two-stage transmission and power electronics, form the innovative electric drivetrain.
Refined exterior styling
The exterior of the new G 580 with EQ Technology retains its distinctive offroad character while adding new elements that modernise its styling and improve its aerodynamics. Its classic radiator grille is now available as an optional black panel with darkened lamp units and an illuminated contour, creating a striking visual signature as day becomes night. A reprofiled bonnet, vents in the flares over the rear wheel arches, A-pillar cladding and the addition of a small spoiler on the edge of the roof aim to optimise the G-Class wagon’s efficiency while moving.
Likewise, aerodynamically optimized wheels and a cleverly designed rear box preserve the G-Class’s unique character while updating its capabilities. Underneath, the G 580’s battery is protected by a special 26mm-thick casing made from a unique mix of materials including carbon fibre. The G580 can forge through water 850mm deep – 150mm more than internal combustion engine G-Class models.
G 580- Innovative offroad technology
When heading off the beaten track, a G 580 driver can depend on some remarkable new offroad technology to help navigate challenging terrain.
The G-TURN function, for instance, enables the wheels on the left and right to spin in opposite directions, allowing the vehicle to perform a full 360-degree turn on the spot when encountering loose or unpaved surfaces off-road.
Similarly, G-STEERING delivers unprecedented manoeuvrability in tight spots as the wheels turn at different speeds and invoke slight oversteer depending on the situation, allowing a significantly smaller turning circle.
The three-speed offroad crawl function, meanwhile, acts like cruise control when offroading – maintaining optimum propulsion and precise control while the driver focuses on navigating the terrain during technical offroad passages. Like other G-Class vehicles, the G 580 with EQ Technology can confidently traverse 45-degree slopes and drive along 35-degree angles.
The all-new electric G-Class uses torque vectoring to generate virtual differential locks, which makes it possible to precisely meter torque to each individual wheel. By enabling fully variable distribution to the individual wheels, torque builds up exactly where needed within fractions of a second and the all-new electric G-Class holds a clean, confident line up and downhill, even on the toughest terrain. The virtual differential locks also ensure maximum traction with maximum flexibility without distortion when cornering, making the G-Class agile and manoeuvrable at all times. There is no need to manually engage the differential locks via switches in the off-road control unit. Control is fully automatic. This makes it even easier to use and increases driving safety, even in difficult conditions.
Change character with intelligent drive programmes
With just the touch of a button the handling characteristics of the all-new electric G-Class can be adjusted to optimise efficiency and responsiveness.
ELECTRIC DYNAMIC SELECT changes the parameters of the motors, transmission, suspension, ESP® and steering as required. Drivers can choose between ‘Comfort’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Individual’ on-road driving programmes, while ‘Trail’ and ‘Rock’ off-road driving programmes are also available. In the standard setting of ‘Comfort’, for example, propulsion flows primarily to just one axle for optimum energy consumption.
When difficult terrain is encountered, the G 580 also has a switchable LOW RANGE off-road gear reduction. The independence of each motor at the wheels, with its own transmission, ensures maximum torque and smooth temperature management for an off-road reduction ratio on challenging terrain. A HIGH RANGE on-road setting is also available as default.
New technology, classic G-Class interior
Like other G-Class models, the new G 580’s range of functions are controlled via the latest generation MBUX infotainment system, comprising digital instrument cluster and high resolution, wide-aspect infotainment display across half of the vehicle’s dashboard. The comprehensive display ensures drivers have all necessary data at their fingertips when venturing off the beaten path via the new OFFROAD COCKPIT, including gradient, lateral inclination, compass, tyre pressure and selected G-Mode.
Overall efficiency is also enhanced via MBUX Navigation with Electric Intelligence which provides constant recommendations for optimum charging planning on the route entered. At the same time, the system uses ECO Assistant and Range Monitoring to provide continuous information on the battery status, current energy consumption and the resulting estimated range.
Another practical feature is the G 580’s transparent bonnet – cameras providing the driver with a virtual view through the vehicle’s front end, displaying crucial information on steep inclines or rocky obstacles via the central display.
Other standard interior features include Burmester 3D Surround Sound system, KEYLESS-GO, multi-function steering wheel in Nappa leather, power front seats with memory function, heated and cooled cupholders and wireless smartphone charging.
Range finder
The G 580 with EQ technology calls on an ultra-modern, modular lithium-ion high-voltage battery with 216 cells distributed across 12 modules for its power. Thanks to the high energy density, the battery pack has a usable energy content of up to 116 kWh and maximum system voltage of 400 volts.
This set-up gives the all-electric G-Class an NEDC tested range of 567 km. 200 kW DC charging power is also achieved across a very wide SoC (State of Charge) range, meaning that the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in as little as 32 minutes (with a compatible charger in ideal conditions). An 11 kW output onboard charger is available for AC charging either at home or at a public AC station.
