AMG E 53 HYBRID details
Delivering an exhilarating, powerful ride, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID also prioritises efficiency and comfort. Its innovative hybrid technology works together with AMG high-performance know-how to deliver instant power while achieving an impressive NEDC tested fuel economy of 1.7L/100 km – a remarkable improvement over the outgoing model (9.2L/100km).
AMG E 53 HYBRID Powerfully designed exterior
The expressive design of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ combines the best of the E-Class with classic AMG details.
At the front, an immediate statement is made with the AMG-specific radiator trim with vertical slats in high-gloss chrome. Wider front fenders (plus 11mm on each side compared with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class) make room for the larger track width on the front axle. The powerfully shaped outer air inlets, each with two vertical fins, and the central A-wing characterise the independent AMG front apron. The large central lower inlet directs the air to the additional AMG front cooler. There is also an external opening for the wheel arch cooler.
The side view features flowing surfaces without beads or edges, right down to the recessed flush door handles. AMG-specific side skirt panels visually connect the two wheel arches. The light alloy wheels, which are almost flush with the body, emphasise power and dynamism. The flat, horizontally connected LED taillights with clear and striking graphics in the stylised Mercedes star signature are precisely embedded in the powerful rear. The arrangement gives the vehicle structure and underlines the overall width.
The final touch is the AMG spoiler lip on the trunk lid, the AMG rear apron with diffuser and two round double tailpipe trims on the left and right. Hybrid-specific badges on the front fenders and rear indicate the electrified drive. The E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ comes with 20-inch light-alloy wheels as standard. Forged wheels with a diameter of 21 inches are also available as an option.
AMG E 53 HYBRID High-tech, comfortable interior
Inside, the E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ blends state-of-the-art technology with and driver-focused design, and brings together the sophisticated elegance of the E-Class with the performance and styling of AMG.
As standard, there is an E 53 HYBRID-specific, illuminated trim in grey open-pore ash wood with an AMG logo. Electrically adjustable, climatised AMG sports seats are standard, with nappa leather upholstery, featuring the embossed AMG emblem on the front head restraints. The AMG performance seats can be ordered as an option. The basic equipment includes the AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather with AMG steering wheel buttons.
The interior delivers the refined luxury synonymous with the E-Class. Elevating the driving experience, the standard specification includes the immersive MBUX Superscreen with a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch passenger display, Active Ambient Lighting, and THERMOTRONIC 4-zone automatic climate control with innovative Digital Vent Control. Seamless smartphone integration, wireless charging in the front, and the exceptional Burmester® 4D surround sound system with 17 speakers complete the atmosphere – setting the benchmark for comfort and convenience.
Driver and central displays along with the latest generation MBUX multimedia system are high-resolution and user-friendly – the driver can monitor route and vehicle performance while conveniently accessing multimedia, driver assistance systems and climate control. This includes hybrid-specific displays and functions providing information about, among other things, the charge status and temperature of the high-voltage battery as well as the electric range. AMG-specific display styles and functions, such as the optional TRACK PACE are meticulously designed to maximise the vehicle’s performance.
The rear seats offer plenty of space for everyday use while the luggage compartment can be expanded using the folding rear seat backrests, increasing the luggage capacity to 370L.
Innovative hybrid powertrain
The basis for the sporty and efficient drive is the clever AMG 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo engine combined with a 120 kW electric motor integrated into the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission to save space. The electric motor’s maximum torque of 480 Nm is available instantly and boosts maximum system torque to 750 Nm, translating into dynamic acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.
Spin the drive mode knob on the AMG performance steering wheel and the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ can be driven electrically, with an NEDC tested electric driving range of 100 km, thanks to the innovative high-voltage battery. The all new E 53 HYBRID is equipped with an 11kW onboard AC charger.
Additional software and hardware changes further enhance performance, including a new twin-scroll exhaust gas turbocharger with higher boost pressure, an additional front cooler, and a wheel arch cooler. These aid the 3.0-litre engine to react instantaneously to accelerator pedal commands for a highly dynamic driving experience.
Dynamic driving experience
The AMG development team developed and tuned the AMG RIDE CONTROL steel spring suspension with adaptive adjustable damping specifically for the requirements of the E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+. It offers a balanced combination of adequate acoustic insulation for purely electric driving in combination with a very sporty character typical of AMG. The steel suspension with a sporty spring-damper setup and adaptive two-valve adjustable damping combines high driving dynamics with very good ride comfort. The damping on each wheel adapts to the current driving situation and road conditions. The damper characteristic curve can be pre-selected in three levels: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport+”, enabling a marked differentiation between long-distance comfort and sporty driving dynamics.
The standard all-wheel drive provides optimal traction. It ensures high driving stability and safety on dry roads as well as in wet, slippery conditions. An electromechanically controlled clutch distributes the driving force variably to the front and rear axles in each driving programme. This ensures maximum traction, driving dynamics and safety in all driving conditions.
Standard active rear-axle steering combines stability and agility. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction of the front wheels (up to 100 km/h) or in the same direction (over 100 km/h). The system therefore enables both agile and stable driving behaviour.
AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package
For an even more emotional driving experience, the standard AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package bundles technical and visual equipment details. Such as larger high-performance composite brake system at the front. With 390×36 mm brake discs and six-piston fixed calipers. The brake calipers are painted red and visually underline the sporty character.
The electronically controlled rear axle locking differential enables even better traction out of corners. Greater driving stability and load distribution without loss of power in all driving conditions. Dynamic engine mounts enable a sporty or comfortable connection of the engine to the body.
A high-tech feature of the high-performance composite brake system is the electromechanical brake booster. It ensures that the braking system efficiently combines electrical recuperation with the hydraulic brake.
Depending on the driving situation and braking requirements, the vacuum-independent braking system automatically controls the flexible change between hydraulic braking and electrical recuperation. This means maximum recuperation performance can be achieved more frequently and over a longer period of time.
Unique driving programmes
The standard AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving programmes are tailored precisely to the drive technology of the plug-in hybrid. They adjust important parameters such as the response of the drive and transmission, the steering characteristic, the chassis damping or the sound. Using the dial buttons on the AMG performance steering wheel, the driver can easily switch between the various programmes.
In addition to the well-known driving programmes “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+”, “Smoothness” and “Individual”, two hybrid-specific driving programmes are added in the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+. “Electric” and “Battery Hold”.
By default, E 53 hybrid model starts silently in the “Electric” driving programme when the electric motor is switched on. In “Electric”, purely electric driving takes place with the 120 kW (163 hp) electric motor. Until the charge level of the battery is too low or the driver requests more power. And overcomes the pressure point of the haptic accelerator pedal. Wherein the intelligent operating strategy switches to the power of the combustion engine.
Battery Hold
In the “Battery Hold” driving programme, the combustion engine and electric motor run in a co-ordinated manner. Depending on the situation. The operating strategy keeps the battery charge level almost constant. The use of the electric motor is limited and optimised for low energy consumption. Recuperation balances the energy balance again. By simply changing the driving programme, drivers can decide when they want to fully use the battery charge again, for example for inner-city traffic.
With the RACE START function – offered as standard for the Australian market – the optimal sprint from a standstill is achieved. In RACE START, the drive technology pulls out all the stops to achieve the best possible acceleration of 0-100km/h in 3.8 seconds. To do this, the software retrieves the full power of the electric motor (120 kW) and the combustion engine (330 kW) as well as the maximum torque in each case.
AMG E 53 HYBRID Optional packages
AMG Night Package
With the AMG Night package (P60), exterior elements such as the front splitter and exterior mirror housings are finished in high-gloss black. Further design elements (PAZ) in black chrome, including
- the radiator shell,
- the door handles and the Mercedes star at the rear together with the black chrome-plated tailpipe trims.
Finally, the package includes
- 20-inch AMG 10-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels
- painted in matte black with a high-sheen finish
AMG Carbon Fibre Package
Parts made of carbon fibre or in a carbon fibre design, such as the exterior mirror caps and spoiler lip (U93), emphasise the performance character of the vehicle and make it look even sportier. In the cabin, AMG Carbon-fibre trim features on the centre console, along with the AMG steering wheel. With striking carbon-fibre design combined with MICROCUT microfibre providing a good grip. A visual and tactile highlight.
AMG Performance Seat Package
With their particularly sporty seat position, the AMG Performance seats set a base for optimal car handling by the driver.
The seat shape has
